Michael Sy, PhD, MHPEd, OTRP: OT and Research

In this post, we will learn from Michael Sy, PhD, MHPEd, OTRP (He/Him/His). Michael is a Filipino occupational therapist, a health professions specialist, and an occupational scientist. A previous Associate Professor of health professions education from the University of the Philippines in Manila, his current post as a senior researcher is with the Institute of Occupational Therapy at the Zurich University of Applied Sciences in Switzerland. His Ph.D. work and practice revolve around occupational therapy in substance addiction and rehabilitation, social and justice determinants of health, and inter-professional education and collaborative practice in diverse health/social care settings. 

Q & A with Michael:

Please tell us a little about yourself and some of your favorite occupations.

I am Michael Sy, a Filipino occupational therapist. I love going to the gym, swimming, and hiking.

What motivated you to contribute to this podcast series?

I think I can share my uncommonness as an OT, as a person, and as a Filipino in this podcast.

Please describe the UncommonOT work that you do and the setting in which you work, the population you serve and the needs that you address.

I do research and scholarship about the Philippinization of the occupation as a concept

What inspired you or drew you to this type of OT work?
